NATO Condemns Iran’s Support for ‘Proxy Forces’ in Statement

The NATO summit held on Monday, June 24, issued a statement in Brussels calling on Iran to halt all ballistic missile activities in violation of UN Resolution 2231 and refrain from destabilizing actions.

In Section 52 of the statement addressed to Iran, it stated: “We are committed to ensuring Iran never develops nuclear weapons. We welcome substantive discussions among JCPOA participants and separate negotiations with the United States to reach an agreement on the mutual return of the United States and Iran to JCPOA compliance.”

NATO emphasized in another section of its statement: “We support achieving the goal of preventing the proliferation of nuclear weapons resulting from the JCPOA and ensuring the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program. It is crucial for Iran to prevent escalation and maintain the space for dialogue.”

NATO leaders stated in the statement: “To ensure Iran fulfills its commitments under the Non-Proliferation Treaty and other obligations, we strongly support the International Atomic Energy Agency. The JCPOA, if strengthened, repaired, and fully implemented, can pave the way for addressing broader regional and security concerns, including supporting nuclear non-proliferation.”

The statement also noted: “We condemn Iran’s support for proxy forces and non-state armed actors, including financing, training, and expanding their missile and weapons technology. We call on Iran to halt all ballistic missile activities in violation of UN Resolution 2231, refrain from destabilizing actions, and play a constructive role in strengthening regional stability and peace.”

During the NATO summit that began Monday, June 24, two important issues are at the center of discussions among senior officials. First, the issue of Afghanistan given that with the withdrawal of U.S. military forces, it requires support for peace and stability. The other important issue is support for Ukraine, particularly as relations between Kyiv and Moscow regarding Russian military movements on Ukraine’s borders are experiencing tensions.
