A ‘Ship Belonging to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Attacked in the Red Sea

News of an attack on an Iranian ship has been released by news agencies, with the attack reportedly carried out by Israel. Iran and Israel have not officially issued statements regarding the attack on the ship named “Iran Saviz.”
News of an attack on an Iranian ship reportedly belonging to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has been reported by several news sources, including the “Tasnim” news agency.
The German news agency, citing “Tasnim,” reported that the “Iran Saviz” ship’s mission was to provide support to Iranian merchant vessels in the Red Sea.
The German news agency, citing the American website “Global Security,” reported that the damaged ship belongs to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
Thought-Provoking Timing
The “New York Times,” in publishing a report on the attack on the “Iran Saviz” ship, pointed to the coincidence of this attack with the announcement of progress in negotiations regarding the nuclear dispute with Iran.
The newspaper’s correspondent writes: “The explosion [on the Saviz ship] occurs on the very day that progress in negotiations related to a nuclear agreement with Iran is being reported. Progress in an agreement that Israel opposes.”
The “Al Arabiya” news network also reported, citing its news sources, that the attack was carried out using a magnetic bomb by “Israeli commandos.”
It is said that the point of impact was a “sticky mine” or, as “Al Arabiya” calls it, a magnetic bomb, below the waterline. No report has been published about possible casualties from this attack or damage to the ship. “Al Arabiya” has described the extent of damage as “severe.”
Islamic Republic of Iran officials have not issued a statement regarding the attack on the “Iran Saviz” ship up to the time of publication of this report. The Israeli government also typically does not report on its military operations.
This is while the “New York Times” has attributed responsibility for this attack to Israel and reported that the attack was carried out in response to an attack on an Israeli merchant vessel.
Cargo Ship or Military Vessel?
The “New York Times” reported that although the “Saviz” ship is technically considered a cargo ship, it was a military vessel.
The newspaper further reported that this ship is the first military vessel to have been targeted in the Iran-Israel confrontation to date.
The “New York Times” referred to several Telegram channels affiliated with members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps that have claimed the attack on the aforementioned ship was carried out by Israel.
“Al Arabiya” also, in its report, considered the attack on the Saviz ship as a continuation of naval warfare between Iran and Israel. This news source referred to the March attack on the “Shahrkord” ship by Israel.
Four weeks ago, the “Wall Street Journal” reported Israeli attacks on at least 12 Iranian ships over the past two years in the Red Sea, and citing statements from American and regional officials, reported that the ships were mostly carrying oil for Syria and the attacks were carried out with naval mines. The newspaper’s report stated that Israel also prevented the passage of other ships carrying weapons or oil for Syria.
