Iran Floods: 11 Provinces Affected by Flooding and Waterlogging, 61 Main and Secondary Roads Closed

According to reports from the morning of April 17, 11 provinces in Iran are currently facing flooding and waterlogging. The Information and Traffic Control Center of the Traffic Police has also reported that 61 main and secondary roads across the country are blocked.

Morteza Salimi, head of Iran’s Red Crescent Rescue and Relief Organization, told the Mehr News Agency that provinces including Ilam, South Khorasan, Razavi and North Khorasan, Zanjan, Sistan and Baluchestan, Fars, Kerman, Golestan, Hormozgan, and Yazd are currently dealing with flooding and waterlogging.

According to Mr. Salimi, relief and rescue operations have been conducted in 105 cities and villages, with assistance provided to more than 14,000 people in total.

In addition, relief operations continue in South Khorasan and Razavi Khorasan, Sistan and Baluchestan, Fars, Kerman, and Hormozgan.

61 Roads Closed

Iran’s Traffic Police say 61 main and secondary roads across the country are blocked. These roads include routes in Mazandaran, Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad, Gilan, Hamadan, Golestan, Semnan, Ilam, Kurdistan, Khuzestan, Bushehr, Lorestan, the Tehran metropolis, South and Razavi Khorasan, Kerman, Semnan, Sistan and Baluchestan, Yazd, and Ardabil.

In some roads, landslides have been reported; in some routes, safety is inadequate; a number of roads are blocked due to rainfall and river overflow. Some routes are currently closed due to landslides and some due to repair and safety measures.

Flooding Continues in Northern Sistan and Baluchestan

Mohammad Ali Peiri, the governor of Hirmand, told ISNA news agency that the water that entered flows toward the Shirdelq rivers, Canal One, and Golmard Canal. According to Mr. Peiri, all three rivers have “control dams and flooding can be controlled so as not to cause damage to people.”

The governor of Zabol County also stated that no villages in this county have been evacuated so far.

Gholamreza Ganji, meanwhile, rejected “rumors” about “the collapse of dams in some neighboring countries.”

While he did not name these “neighboring countries,” he emphasized that “the water coming from Afghanistan will be utilized in the best possible way.”

According to reports from Monday, the flooding from Iran into Pakistan has resulted in casualties and injuries in Iran’s eastern neighbor. In the border areas of this country, reports have also been published about river overflows and warnings about flooding and potential damage to the region.

Rainfall Continues in the Northwest

Iran’s Meteorological Organization said that rainfall in West Azerbaijan and East Azerbaijan provinces will continue on Tuesday.

According to the organization, at the same time, the air temperature in the northeast of the country will increase.

Iran’s Meteorological Organization predicts that rainfall will gradually spread to the central, northeast, and northwest regions of the country, and on Friday, with the shift of currents over the Caspian Sea, rainfall will reach coastal provinces and continue for several days.
