Corona in Iran – Hormozgan’s potential to become the ‘gateway to the fifth peak’ and the risk of measles outbreak in Iran

Statistics from Iran’s Ministry of Health show that from June 5 to 6, 9,994 new cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in the country. Also in these 24 hours, 165 more people died as a result of contracting this virus.
Many doubt the accuracy of official statistics, and even the Islamic Consultative Assembly Research Center has stated that the actual number of cases and deaths is several times higher than official figures.

Meanwhile, Hassan Rouhani has also said that with the continuation of the current vaccination process, the impact of investment on the tourism industry will be seen before the end of the year.
According to Ministry of Health statistics, so far 3,499,563 vaccine doses have been administered.
- Legal action against violators of health protocols in elections
Jamal Orf, head of the country’s election headquarters, said that violating health protocols is considered an election violation and legal action will be taken against violators.
He said there are 33,000 electronic ballot boxes in the country that have “no security problems whatsoever.”
The National Corona Countermeasures Headquarters has increased voting hours for holding the presidential election under corona conditions and announced that voting will be possible from 7 AM to 2 AM the next day.
Alirezа Raeisi, spokesman for the National Corona Countermeasures Headquarters, also said that people infected with corona will also be able to vote through mobile voting.
- Risk of measles outbreak in the country
Seyyed Mohsen Zahra’i, head of the Department of Vaccine-Preventable Diseases at the Ministry of Health, announced the identification of measles cases in Sistan and Baluchestan, Khorasan, Hormozgan, and Alborz.
In total, 24 cases of measles have been observed in these provinces.
According to Mr. Zahra’i, the reason for the measles outbreak is disruption in vaccination due to the spread of the coronavirus.
- Possibility of Hormozgan becoming the gateway to the fifth peak of corona
With the beginning of June, the situation in Hormozgan Province regarding the spread of the coronavirus has worsened. Accordingly, based on official statistics, it is said that every two minutes, one positive corona test is confirmed in this province.
Also, on June 4, Hormozgan broke the record for corona hospitalizations in the last eleven months by registering 494 hospitalizations in one day.
Fateme Norouzian, spokesperson for Hormozgan Medical Sciences University, says that approximately 40 flights depart from this province daily, which could be one of the reasons for the spread of corona.
Meanwhile, the governor of Bandar Abbas announced a one-week quarantine of 32 villages and five district centers in this city due to the high prevalence of coronavirus.
Health experts are concerned that this province could become the ‘gateway to the fifth peak of corona’ in the country.
