Coronavirus in Mashhad; 101 Children Dead at Akbar Hospital

Since the end of last March, 1,179 children have been hospitalized at the coronavirus patient center in Razavi Khorasan Province, of which 101 have died. The head of the intensive care unit at “Akbar” Hospital in Mashhad says children account for three percent of deaths in Razavi Khorasan.
Gholamreza Khademi, head of the COVID ICU at “Akbar” Hospital in Mashhad, reported the deaths of 101 children over the past year in Razavi Khorasan Province due to COVID-19.
He announced that coronavirus mortality in children accounted for approximately three percent of all hospitalizations in Razavi Khorasan Province and added: “Deaths in children occur for two reasons; the first cause is cardiovascular complications and the second cause of child deaths is underlying disease.”
These statistics were presented at a roundtable organized by the Medical System Organization of Mashhad entitled “Investigating the Resurgence of Coronavirus and the Emergence of New Variants of This Virus.”
According to ISNA news agency quoting Khademi: “In the first peak, most children aged five to ten years contracted coronavirus, which has been the case worldwide, and in late November when the peak of deaths occurred, infants contracted respiratory coronavirus.”
The head of the intensive care unit at Akbar Hospital complained about the shortcomings of the health deputy of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences in public education, saying: “I wish there were vehicles on the streets giving necessary warnings to people through loudspeakers. In our country these educational efforts are not carried out and to prevent coronavirus we only emphasize media, including television, and maintaining social and respiratory distance.”
Gholamreza Khademi added that physical, administrative, and directive approaches have little effectiveness in preventing coronavirus and people need to receive practical training to prevent coronavirus transmission.
Emphasizing that vaccination is not being carried out on children, he recalled that more than 60 percent of virus transmission to pediatric specialists at Mashhad University of Medical Sciences is through contact with children.
Meanwhile, in the latest announcement, Iran’s Ministry of Health’s Communicable Disease Management Center announced the provision of 120 million doses of coronavirus vaccine in the coming year and the vaccination of approximately 60 million people.
Sima Sadat Lari, the spokesperson for this ministry, also said that 61 people died from coronavirus in the past 24 hours and the total number of deaths has reached 58,684.
