Ali Motahari Announces Candidacy for 2021 Presidential Election

Ali Motahari, former representative in the Iranian Parliament (Majlis), announced his candidacy for Iran’s presidential election in 2021.

The ISNA news agency reported this on Thursday, March 28.

Motahari served as a representative of Tehran in the eighth, ninth, and tenth sessions of the Islamic Consultative Assembly, but was disqualified in the eleventh parliamentary election.

Known as a conservative figure in cultural and hijab-related matters, he has made explicit criticisms of government policies in recent years and has distanced himself from conservatives in the political arena.

The thirteenth round of Iran’s presidential election is scheduled to take place on June 18, 2021, coinciding with the sixth round of elections for city and village Islamic councils in Iran.

According to law, Hassan Rouhani is ineligible to participate in this election due to serving two consecutive terms as president of Iran.

Previously, Hossein Dehqan, former Defense Minister and military advisor to the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic, and Mostafa Kavakebian, Secretary General of the People’s Democratic Party, have officially announced their candidacy for this round of elections.

Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, Mohammad Javad Zarif, Foreign Minister, and Saeed Mohammad, commander of the Khatam al-Anbia headquarters, are also mentioned as other potential candidates.
