Canada Report: Islamic Republic Failed to Conduct Proper Investigation into Downing of Ukrainian Aircraft

A 79-page report from an independent Canadian institution states that Iran has not conducted proper and serious investigations regarding the downing of a Ukrainian aircraft and has left many questions unanswered.
According to Reuters news agency, the report indicates Canada’s frustration with Iran’s investigation into the crash of the Ukrainian aircraft shot down by Revolutionary Guard missiles near Tehran.
In this incident, 176 people were killed, including citizens of Iran, Canada, Ukraine, Britain, and Afghanistan.
After several days of concealment, the Revolutionary Guards finally announced—following the release of evidence of the missile impact on the aircraft by some countries—that the aircraft was mistakenly and accidentally targeted.
Raf Goodale, Canada’s former cabinet minister who is now responsible for assisting the families of victims and preventing similar incidents in the future, says “many key aspects of the Ukrainian aircraft crash remain unclear.”
He stated that Iran is responsible and has still not conducted an independent and transparent investigation into the downing of the aircraft, and many important questions remain unanswered.
Last month, a United Nations aviation agency requested that Iran accelerate its investigations into this incident. In late last month, Ukraine also accused Iran of delaying clarification of this event.
In his report, Goodale states that Iran should explain how the country’s radar system identified a civilian aircraft as a threat, why the country’s airspace remained open, and which Revolutionary Guard commander issued the order to fire.
Ukrainian aircraft flight PS-752 was shot down by the Revolutionary Guards’ air defense system on December 29 of last year, and all 176 passengers died.
The governments of Canada and Ukraine have consistently stated that Iran has not followed through on its promises for full accountability and has not provided the necessary cooperation to clarify the “truth.”
Meanwhile, numerous reports have been released about threats made against survivors of the Ukrainian aircraft crash regarding silence, detention, and imprisonment sentences for those who protested this incident in Iran.
