Saba Kardafshariyon, Civil Activist Imprisoned in Iran, Contracted Coronavirus

Sogand Kardafshariyon, sister of Saba Kardafshariyon, a civil activist imprisoned in Iran, announced on Sunday, March 15, that her imprisoned sister had contracted coronavirus.
Ms. Kardafshariyon criticized the responsible authorities in her Twitter account, writing: “Saba’s coronavirus test came back positive and only after 6 days do they want to quarantine her. If you quarantine new arrivals and distribute masks and disinfectants, most people in the ward won’t get coronavirus. It’s better to quarantine the ward.”
Voice of America on October 20 of the current year, in an exclusive report, revealed the pressure of the Iranian government on Saba Kardafshariyon and her mother, Raheleh Ahmadi. According to this report, Ms. Kardafshariyon has suffered from digestive and stomach problems as well as internal bleeding due to prolonged solitary confinement and psychological torture, but authorities have refused to transfer her to a hospital outside the prison.
Repeated reports from human rights organizations about the critical situation in Iranian prisons during the coronavirus pandemic have increased concerns about Saba Kardafshariyon’s health.
The United States has repeatedly condemned violent conduct and widespread suppression of protesters and civil activists in various cases, as well as the repeated and continuous violation of Iranian citizens’ rights by the Islamic Republic.
