Execution of Ruhollah Zam Postpones Europe-Iran Economic Meeting

An economic meeting between Europe and Iran, scheduled to be held in Tehran from tomorrow, was canceled due to the execution of Ruhollah Zam. Patrick Wintour, diplomatic editor of the Guardian newspaper, who was supposed to moderate a panel discussion at the meeting, also withdrew from the event.
The French Foreign Ministry announced that its ambassador in Tehran will not participate in an online economic meeting between Europe and Iran. The meeting was scheduled to begin tomorrow, Monday, December 14 (Azar 24), with the presence of ambassadors from four European countries—France, Germany, Austria, and Italy—in Tehran.
The French Foreign Ministry also stated in a tweet that ambassadors from other European countries—Germany, Austria, and Italy—will also refrain from attending the meeting.
Organizers of the event said after canceling the Europe-Iran economic forum that the meeting has been postponed. Patrick Wintour, diplomatic editor of the Guardian, who was to moderate a panel discussion at the economic meeting with the participation of ambassadors from Germany, France, Austria, and Italy, announced that he will refrain from participating in the event.
In a tweet, he stated that the reason for his withdrawal was the “abhorrent” execution of Ruhollah Zam, a journalist opposed to the Islamic Republic government.
The cancellation and subsequent postponement of this economic forum between ambassadors of four European countries and Iran has been attributed to recent tensions in the relations between European countries and the Islamic Republic. The cause of this tension was European countries’ protest against the execution of Ruhollah Zam.
The French government on Saturday, December 12, called the execution of Ruhollah Zam “barbaric and unacceptable.” The European Union condemned the execution, and the German Foreign Ministry spokesperson expressed “abhorrence” on behalf of the German government.
Following the reactions of European countries to the execution of Ruhollah Zam, the Islamic Republic government summoned the ambassadors of Germany and France.
