Hamed Gharaoglani Sentenced to Death and 13 Years and 3 Months Imprisonment

Hamed Gharaoglani, a political prisoner at Urmia Prison, has been sentenced to death by Branch 2 of Urmia Revolutionary Court. Mr. Gharaoglani was also sentenced to 13 years and 3 months imprisonment in the second part of his case by Branch 3 of Urmia Revolutionary Court. The verdict was announced to him at Urmia Prison during the current week. He was arrested on June 28, 2020 by Urmia Information Ministry agents and transferred to Urmia Prison on July 17, 2020 after the completion of interrogations.

According to Hrana News Agency, the news organ of the Human Rights Activists in Iran group, Hamed Gharaoglani, a political prisoner at Urmia Prison, has been sentenced to imprisonment and death by Urmia Revolutionary Court.

Based on this, Mr. Gharaoglani was sentenced to death by Branch 2 of Urmia Revolutionary Court in the first part of his case on charges of moharebeh (enmity against God) through membership in the Organization of the People’s Mujahideen of Iran (PMOI). He was also sentenced to 13 years and 3 months by Branch 3 of Urmia Revolutionary Court in the second part of his case on charges of participation in military training courses and attacks on Basij bases, propaganda against the system, insulting sacred values, and insulting the leadership.

The verdict was announced to Mr. Gharaoglani at Urmia Prison during the current week.

The court hearing on Mr. Gharaoglani’s charges was previously held on September 28, 2020 at Urmia Revolutionary Court.

Hamed Gharaoglani was arrested on June 28, 2020 by the Ministry of Intelligence forces and transferred to the detention facility of this security agency in Urmia. He was ultimately transferred to Urmia Prison on July 17, 2020 after the completion of interrogation procedures and has been housed in Ward 3 of Urmia Prison since that time.

Mr. Gharaoglani, who worked in CCTV camera installation prior to his arrest, withdrew from the Master’s degree program in Computer Architecture at Shahid Beheshti University in 2016 for financial reasons, and intended to retake the master’s entrance exam this year. After his withdrawal from university, he worked in Turkey for a period.

The Gharaoglani family is among the families of victims of the eight-year Iran-Iraq War. He also suffers from epilepsy.
