Labor Activist Parveen Mohammadi Sentenced to Prison in Absentia Again

Parveen Mohammadi, a labor activist, has been sentenced in absentia to an additional one year in prison by Iran’s judiciary in a new case.
The Telegram channel “Free Union of Iranian Workers” announced the news, stating that in the issued verdict, Ms. Mohammadi has also been banned from leaving the country.
Parveen Mohammadi is a recognized labor activist who has been arrested and imprisoned multiple times in recent years.
Ms. Mohammadi’s lawyer stated that the new case was adjudicated in absentia despite his client having a registered address and known whereabouts. According to him, this case dates back to 2017 and Parveen Mohammadi has been sentenced to one year in prison on charges of “propaganda against the system” due to several speeches she gave to retired workers and an interview regarding the Plasco fire.
In its statement, the Free Union of Iranian Workers condemned the issuance of the in absentia prison sentence for Parveen Mohammadi and called for the immediate annulment of this verdict.
The United States has repeatedly condemned Iran’s security measures against workers. The U.S. State Department stated in a message that with the expenses the Islamic Republic regime has incurred in Syria, it could have paid workers’ wages in Iran.
