German Chancellor Calls for Unity and Reform in the United Nations

Angela Merkel, during the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the United Nations’ founding, called on the organization and its members to demonstrate greater solidarity and readiness for reforms. The German Chancellor also called for the expansion of the Security Council.
The United Nations celebrated the seventy-fifth anniversary of its establishment Monday evening, September 21 (September 21) with a special ceremony.
Donald Trump, President of the United States, was among the absent figures at this ceremony. Initially, he was supposed to be the first speaker with a pre-recorded video message. However, in his place, Cherith Norman Chalet, Deputy Ambassador of the United States to the United Nations, delivered the speech.
The 75th anniversary celebration of the United Nations was held in a more modest manner than previous plans due to restrictions imposed by the coronavirus pandemic.
Due to coronavirus restrictions, only one representative from each country was present in the United Nations hall. Leaders and heads of countries had previously sent their speeches and video messages.
Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany, was one of the speakers at this ceremony with her video message. In her speech, she called on the United Nations and its members to demonstrate greater unity and readiness for reforms.
According to her: “The effectiveness and capability of the United Nations ultimately depend on the extent to which its members are in agreement.”
Merkel stated: “The United Nations Security Council is excessively blocked in cases where clear decisions must be made. We need reforms.”
According to Germany’s Chancellor, the United Nations must grow and develop to be able to meet the challenges of the 21st century. Angela Merkel added: “Germany has the readiness to continue to assume responsibility and, with pleasure, be part of an expanded Security Council.”
Germany seeks to become a permanent member of the Security Council. Currently, this country is present in the council for two years as a non-permanent member.
The German Chancellor also emphasized the importance of international cooperation in her speech and said that these collaborations are often overshadowed by “the interests and benefits of individual members.”
António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, at the beginning of the anniversary ceremony of this international body’s founding, called on member states for international cooperation.
According to him: “Today, there are many multilateral challenges, while the number of multilateral solutions is far fewer.”
Guterres stated: “To combat problems such as climate change, inequality and discrimination against women, hate speech, and poverty, effective cooperation is needed that has effort and foresight among its characteristics.”
