Coronavirus in Iran; Death toll in Tehran accounts for nearly two-thirds of total casualties

The Ministry of Health announced the official death toll from coronavirus in Iran over the past 24 hours as 211 people, and two members of Tehran’s City Council stated that 136 of this number are related to Tehran’s statistics, calling for a two-week shutdown of the capital instead of one week.

Based on statistics from Iran’s Ministry of Health, with the death of 211 more patients infected with coronavirus in the past 24 hours, the official death toll from this virus in Iran has reached 26,957 people, showing an increase compared to previous days.

Sima Lari, spokesperson for the Ministry of Health, on Sunday, October 4, in her daily report announced the identification of 3,653 new cases of COVID-19 and said that currently 4,154 patients with severe cases of this disease are under special medical care.

Based on this official report, the total number of coronavirus patients in Iran has also reached nearly 472,000 people.

The accuracy of daily and official statistics announced by the Ministry of Health has always been seriously questioned by some independent experts, and some sources say the number of cases and deaths in Iran is between two to several times the official figures.

Tehran’s Situation

Nevertheless, based on these official reports, two members of Tehran’s City Council today announced the number of coronavirus deaths in Tehran over the past 24 hours as 136 people and called for at least a two-week shutdown of the capital instead of a one-week closure.

Nahid Khodakarmi, head of the Health Committee of Tehran’s City Council, referring to the announcement of a one-week restriction issued yesterday by the Tehran Provincial Governor’s Office, said “the answer to whether controlling the pandemic is possible with a one-week shutdown is no”.

According to a statement from the Tehran Provincial Governor’s Office, from Saturday until October 9, the activities of some centers in Tehran Province have been banned.

On this basis, educational centers, mosques, cinemas, theaters, museums and museum gardens, reception halls, women’s salons and beauty centers, holding social, cultural events and conferences, high-contact sports clubs, cafes, coffeeshops and teahouses, zoos and amusement parks, water recreational centers and indoor pools, fitness centers and Friday prayers have been shut down or banned.

However, Ms. Khodakarmi did not consider mere announcement of restrictions sufficient and said: “If we cannot properly control these restrictions, after that we will still witness a peak in disease.”

She also added that if officials cannot have better work and decisions, they should pursue “herd epidemic”.

Nahid Khodakarmi and Mohammad Javad Haqshenas, another member of Tehran’s City Council, called for a two-week shutdown of Tehran instead of one week and emphasized that “if travel is not restricted, we will once again witness the virus moving toward unaffected areas of the country”.

According to an announcement by the Ministry of Health, the current situation in the provinces of Tehran, Isfahan, Qom, East Azerbaijan, South Khorasan, Semnan, Qazvin, Lorestan, Ardabil, Khuzestan, Kermanshah, Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad, Gilan, Bushehr, Zanjan, Ilam, Razavi Khorasan, Mazandaran, Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari, Alborz, West Azerbaijan, Central, Kerman, North Khorasan, Hamadan and Yazd remains red.
