Organization ‘United Against Nuclear Iran’: Iran’s Judicial System is Among the Most Merciless and Unjust Legal Systems in the World

The organization “United Against Nuclear Iran” has published an article on its website examining the topic of the ruthless suppression of opponents of the ruling regime in Iran and its leaders by the Islamic Republic’s judicial system.
The organization “United Against Nuclear Iran” began this article by raising the issue of a decade of governmental suppression against Nasrin Sotoudeh, a lawyer and imprisoned human rights defender, who last week ended her hunger strike after 49 days due to the deterioration of her physical condition.
The article states that Ms. Sotoudeh, who was first arrested by the authorities of the ruling regime in Iran 10 years ago, endangered her physical health in order to draw everyone’s attention to the poor and unjust conditions of political prisoners.
In 2019, Ms. Sotoudeh was convicted on fabricated charges including assembly and conspiracy against national security, spreading lies, and disturbing public opinion, receiving one of the severest sentences that Iran’s judicial system has ever issued against a human rights defender: 38 years in prison and 148 lashes.
The organization “United Against Nuclear Iran” in this piece republished an article by Jason Rezaian, a Washington Post writer and former hostage in Iran. Mr. Rezaian writes that the Iranian regime increasingly targets activists like Ms. Sotoudeh because of the role they play in defending freedom and fundamental human rights.
One of the sources of “United Against Nuclear Iran” titled “Iran’s War on Protesters: Death, Detention, and Darkness” provides an overview of the leaders of the Islamic Republic; leaders whose work is to suppress opponents and violently target civilians and protesters in that country.
The organization “United Against Nuclear Iran” in this article, by presenting another source titled “Merciless and Inhumane: Executions and Other Punishments in Iran,” has described the injustices of the Islamic regime’s judicial system and the shameful trampling of human rights in that country.
This organization has also introduced Ebrahim Raisi, head of the judiciary and a potential candidate to succeed Khamenei, and Abolqasem Salavati, known as the “Judge of Death” and one of Iran’s most infamous judges.
The organization “United Against Nuclear Iran” in the continuation of this article has deemed Iran’s judicial system to be among the most merciless and unjust legal systems in the world, and has written that the Iranian regime, by arresting, detaining, imprisoning, and often executing individuals—and that too for committing “crimes” that in reality constitute the exercise of basic and fundamental rights and freedoms of individuals—violates its citizens’ human rights.
The article further states that many of these crimes are vaguely defined and as a result the regime can misuse them whenever it wishes to arbitrarily arrest and punish people. Among these crimes are accusations such as “propaganda against the government,” insulting state officials, and women’s presence in public gatherings without adequate head covering.
The organization “United Against Nuclear Iran” has reminded that the merciless and inhumane nature of Iran’s punishment system is not limited only to executions. Rather, individuals can be arrested without committing any crime and on false and fabricated charges, held in indefinite detention, and subjected to degrading treatment—including torture and deprivation of access to lawyers and legal advisors—to extract confessions. They also keep prisoners in Iran’s overcrowded and congested prisons where they are exposed to torture, rape, and other crimes.
At the end of this article, it states that this past week, 38 people were arrested following protests in support of the Republic of Azerbaijan throughout Iran.
The organization “United Against Nuclear Iran” is a bipartisan nonprofit group that works to prevent the realization of Iran’s ambitions to acquire nuclear weapons.
