Iran’s health ministry spokesman says that in the past 24 hours, 174 more people have died from coronavirus infection.

Accordingly, based on official statistics from the health ministry, the death toll from COVID-19 in Iran has reached 17,976 people.

Sima Sadat Lari, spokesperson for the health ministry, reported on Thursday, August 7, in her daily report, that 2,634 new cases of COVID-19 have been recorded, and added that half of them, namely 1,304 people, have been hospitalized.

According to Ms. Lari, currently in total 4,156 COVID-19 patients are in severe condition of the disease and are hospitalized in intensive care units.

Based on official statistics from the health ministry, which there are serious doubts about its accuracy, so far 320,117 people have been infected with COVID-19 in Iran.

The official statistics of the infected and deaths in Iran are not only not confirmed by independent institutions, but even some officials of the Islamic Republic have questioned them, and some sources, including the Islamic Consultative Assembly Research Center, have mentioned that the death toll is two or several times higher.

Situation in Provinces, Particularly Qom Province

According to Iran’s health ministry spokesman, the provinces of Mazandaran, Tehran, Golestan, North Khorasan, Ardabil, Isfahan, Alborz, Razavi Khorasan, Qom, Kerman, Semnan, East Azerbaijan, Central, Yazd, and Gilan remain in red status.

Provinces of Fars, Ilam, Lorestan, Hormozgan, Zanjan, Qazvin, West Azerbaijan, Bushehr, Hamadan, Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari, and Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad are also on alert status.

Ms. Lari also commented on Qom province’s return from alert status to red status, noting that the first cases of illness in Iran were identified in this province, saying: “From the beginning of spring, we witnessed a declining trend in cases and hospitalizations in Qom province, but from June this declining trend stopped, and in the past six weeks we have witnessed an upward trend in the disease curve in this province.”

According to the health ministry spokesman, “the highest level of compliance with health protocols in this province was in government offices and the worst situation was in bakeries and supermarkets.”

Health experts continue to declare the three principles of “physical distancing, regular hand washing, and mask use” as the most important factors in preventing further spread of the coronavirus.
