Flogging Sentence Carried Out on Bakery Worker Following Complaint by City Friday Prayer Leader

This media outlet, which monitors news related to human rights issues in Iran, published an image of a court ruling against Ruhollah Barzin-Nejad, a bakery worker, reporting that the sentence was carried out on the 17th of Khordad at the Cham Judicial Enforcement Unit.

The ruling in question charges Mr. Barzin-Nejad with “insult.” The Hrana report also states that this citizen faced legal action “due to comments by others under his critical post,” following a complaint by Nourallah Afshar, the Friday Prayer Leader of Cham County.

Hrana then adds, citing an “informed source,” that after the flogging sentence was issued, “despite mediation by several notable figures and elders of Cham city,” the Friday Prayer Leader of the city “refused to accept compensation and continued to insist on carrying out the sentence,” and ultimately the ruling was executed.

Meanwhile, the Tabnak website published a statement from the Friday Prayer Leader of Cham County, claiming he “was not aware of the sentence being carried out” and thought “the case had been closed,” otherwise he “would not have allowed its execution.”

In this statement, he wrote that Mr. Barzin-Nejad had “committed multiple insults against worshippers” on social media and had “addressed personal matters regarding the former Friday Prayer Leader of the city.”

The Cham Friday Prayer Leader wrote that he demanded an apology from the aforementioned person, but he did not comply.
