UN Special Rapporteur’s Mandate on Human Rights Situation in Iran Extended for Another Year

The United Nations Human Rights Council extended the mandate of Javaid Rehman, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Iran, for another year at its meeting on Tuesday, the third of Tir month.

The Human Rights Council website reported that 22 member states of the council voted in favor of extending Mr. Javaid’s mandate, eight countries voted against it, and representatives of 15 countries did not attend the meeting.

Mr. Rehman has held this responsibility since July 2018, following the death of Asma Jahangir, and his mandate can be extended up to six terms annually.

39 human rights groups and organizations had requested in a joint letter on 27 Khordad that the member states of the UN Human Rights Council extend the mandate of the UN Special Rapporteur.

The arrest and issuance of lengthy prison sentences for labor activists, women’s rights activists, journalists, environmental advocates, as well as violations of religious freedoms were among the issues cited by these groups and organizations as reasons for the necessity of extending Javaid Rehman’s mandate.
