Arrest Warrant Issued for Writer and Researcher for Prison Sentence Enforcement in Iran

Mezhgan Kavusi, a writer and researcher, announced on her Instagram page the issuance of an arrest warrant against her by Branch 2 of the Nowshahr County Enforcement of Sentences Office to enforce her prison sentence.

On Friday, the 26th of Ordibehesht, Mezhgan Kavusi posted two videos on her Instagram announcing that the verdict issued against her for enforcing a 76-month and 15-day prison sentence has been sent to Branch 2 of the Nowshahr County Enforcement of Sentences Office and her arrest warrant has been issued. This verdict was issued in the last month of the previous year by the Mazandaran Province Court of Appeals against Ms. Kavusi on charges of “propaganda against the system,” “inciting people to disturb public order,” and “membership in anti-system groups.”

It is worth noting that Ms. Kavusi was initially sentenced to 69 months in prison by the Nowshahr primary court, but this sentence was increased to 76 months and 15 days at the Mazandaran Province Court of Appeals following the prosecutor’s complaint about the inadequacy of the sentence and the rejection of the defense lawyer’s arguments.

According to this Kurdish-Iranian writer and researcher, she has been under medical treatment by her physicians during her period of freedom due to certain health problems, and her doctors have currently announced that Ms. Kavusi should receive treatment outside of prison; however, this request was rejected by the Second Branch of the Enforcement of Sentences Office.

In this video, Mezhgan Kavusi also stated that on Tuesday, the 23rd of Ordibehesht, her husband visited Branch 2 of the Enforcement of Sentences Office to follow up on her case and retrieve personal belongings that were confiscated by security forces when this Kurdish writer and researcher was detained. By coincidence, while meeting with a judicial affairs specialist at the aforementioned branch, he discovered that Ms. Kavusi’s arrest warrant had been issued on that same day.

Based on available information, Mezhgan Kavusi was arrested by security forces on Monday, the 27th of Aban, and after 22 days of detention at Sari Revolutionary Guards Intelligence detention facility, she was transferred to the women’s ward of Nowshahr Prison and was finally released on bail on the 28th of Azar until the completion of legal proceedings.

The U.S. State Department has repeatedly condemned the violent conduct of the Islamic Republic regime toward the Iranian people under various pretexts, including its treatment of freedom of choice in clothing, as well as the repeated and continuous violation of the rights of Iranian citizens by regime agents.
