Brother of Ali Younesi, Detained Student in Iran: My Brother Has No Access to a Lawyer

Nearly 20 days after the arrest of “Ali Younesi,” a student activist, Ali Younesi’s brother has once again expressed concern about being without information regarding his brother’s condition, stating that he has no access to a lawyer.

Reza Younesi, brother of Ali Younesi, a detained student in Iran, posted a series of tweets about the circumstances of his brother’s arrest, announcing that he “has no access to a lawyer and has not been able to speak with his parents during this time.”

He further referenced the long history of human rights violations, including the arrest and torture of students by the Iranian regime, and wrote that his family is “very concerned” about Ali Younesi’s health condition.

Ali Younesi, a computer engineering student, and Amirhosein Moradi, a physics student, were arrested on Friday, April 11, by plainclothes forces without a warrant and with beating, at their residence and transferred to an unknown location.

These arrests are taking place as human rights activists and the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Iran have called for the release of political and ideological prisoners from Iranian prisons in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak.

Similarly, Mike Pompeo, U.S. Secretary of State, said on Wednesday, March 25, at a press conference: “We have asked not only Syria, but also the Islamic Republic of Iran, to release not only American citizens, but all those who have been unjustly imprisoned in these circumstances. This is a humanitarian action, and apart from the fact that these individuals have been illegally imprisoned, in these circumstances humanitarian principles dictate it.”
