Ali Younesi, Detained Student, Infected with Coronavirus in Evin Prison

The brother of Ali Younesi, a detained student in Iran, announced that his brother has contracted the coronavirus in Evin Prison.
Reza Younesi, the brother of this detained student, announced on Thursday, June 22, through a post on his Twitter account that his brother informed the family on Wednesday, June 21, after at least three weeks of detention, through a phone call that he has contracted coronavirus and following infection with this virus is not in good physical condition.
Based on published information, this detained student was transferred at least four days ago, on June 19, after 59 days of detention from solitary confinement to a small cell where he is being held together with eight other detainees.
Reza Younesi also announced on his Twitter account that his parents along with the family of Amirhossein Moradi, a physics student who was detained along with Ali Younesi by plainclothes forces, visited Evin Prison on Thursday, June 22, after 62 days of detention of their children for a visit; however, they were not allowed to visit.
Reza Younesi states that access for a lawyer to the case file is still not being granted, and the lawyer who approached the prosecution on behalf of the family during the past week to review the case file status was not granted access to the file and left the judicial institution.
Previously, the “Committee of Concerned Scientists,” an independent body composed of scientists, physicists, engineers, and professors who are concerned with respecting human rights and freedom of knowledge for their colleagues in the world, in a letter to Ebrahim Raisi, the head of the judiciary of the Islamic Republic of Iran, expressed concern about the conditions of Ali Younesi and Amirhossein Moradi who are in detention by Iranian authorities, and called on Iran’s judiciary chief to clarify the reasons for their detention.

Also, Mike Pompeo, the U.S. Secretary of State, said on Wednesday, March 27, at a press conference: “We have asked not only Syria, but also the Islamic Republic of Iran, to release not only American citizens but all those who have been unjustly imprisoned in these circumstances. This is a humanitarian action, and aside from the fact that these people have been illegally imprisoned, in these circumstances, the principle of humanitarianism requires it.”
