A Member of Parliament Announces Payment of 27 Billion Tomans in Damages to British Embassy

Ahmad Mazni, a member of the Iranian parliament, stated that to compensate for damages caused by students’ attack on the British Embassy in Tehran, “27 billion tomans in arbitrary expenses by rogue elements were paid from the people’s pocket”.
According to ILNA news agency, this member of parliament requested clarification from Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on this matter during the parliament’s open session on April 10.
He said this amount, which was equivalent to 1 million and 300 thousand pounds, was paid for the restoration of several artworks that were damaged during the attack on the British Embassy.
During the attack on the British Embassy in 2011, attackers spent hours roaming inside the embassy building. They tore up British flags and images of Queen Elizabeth and damaged offices and work equipment inside the building.
The discussion of paying compensation to the British Embassy began in 2014 following an agreement between Iran and Britain to reopen their embassies, but details of the amount of damages paid had not been previously announced.
