5.4 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Hormozgan Province; Mountain Collapse and Assessment Teams Deployed

According to reports from Iran, a 5.4 magnitude earthquake in the city of Ruydar in Bandar Khmir, Hormozgan Province, has resulted in injuries to a number of citizens and a mountain collapse on the outskirts of Ruydar.

City officials say the earthquake caused no fatalities, but at least two people have been injured.

The earthquake occurred at a depth of 16 kilometers and struck at 1:30 a.m. on March 17th (26 Esfand).

Ruydar is located 70 kilometers west of Bandarabbas, the capital of Hormozgan Province.

Two weeks ago, a 4.4 magnitude earthquake had also struck in Bastak County in the same province.

The CEO of the Iranian Red Crescent Society of Hormozgan told the Mehr News Agency that a number of residential structures in the Ruydar area have been damaged due to the mountain collapse.

It has been reported that two assessment teams have been dispatched to the area.

A mountain collapsed in the peripheral areas of Ruydar city, and it has been reported that slabs of stone have struck the walls of some homes in the area.

One member of Ruydar’s city council says some residential structures have sustained up to 50 percent damage.

Local reports indicate that the tremors from the earthquake were also felt in Bandarabbas, Bandar Khmir, Minab, Qeshm, and the United Arab Emirates.
