Amnesty International Protests Torture of Detainees in Iran

Amnesty International has condemned inhumane treatment of political prisoners in Iran. According to this human rights organization, thousands of people were arrested following the December 2009 protests, and the manner in which they were treated contradicts law and human justice.
Amnesty International’s human rights investigations show that since the suppression of protests in the winter of last year (December 2017), thousands of people have been arrested in Iran, tortured in prisons, and sentenced to severe punishments.
Amnesty International stated in a recent report that Iran’s judicial authorities do not even respect the codified laws of the Islamic Republic. Law enforcement and security officers, with the approval of judicial officials, brutally trample on the rights of prisoners.
It is reported that during the suppression of protests, approximately seven thousand men, women, and children were arrested within a few days. Officers even arrested children and wounded individuals who were hospitalized and took them to detention centers.
Based on reports received by this human rights organization, prisoners are subjected to the heaviest pressures to “confess” to crimes they did not commit. They are sentenced to long-term imprisonment and even death based on these same “confessions.” They are deprived of the right to free defense and the right to choose a defense attorney.
Unbelievable Violence and Brutality
According to Amnesty International, videos have been obtained from the days of Iran’s protests that clearly show officers directly targeting ordinary, unarmed people with gunfire.
According to Diana El-Tahawy, Deputy Director of this organization for Middle Eastern affairs, the aforementioned images have left the world in shock and astonishment.
Ms. Tahawy says that there is no doubt that in the confines of prisons and away from public view, officers of the Islamic Republic treated detainees with unbelievable cruelty and brutality.
Amnesty International has called on the international community to pay greater attention to the dire human rights situation in Iran.
All UN member states have been asked to demand from the Iranian regime the release of political prisoners, as these individuals have committed no “crime” other than exercising their right to freedom of expression and assembly.
