80 Percent of Sexual Assault Cases in Iran Go Unreported

Saeed Madani, a sociologist, has stated that 80 percent of sexual assault cases in Iran go unreported, adding that the highest number of reported sexual assault cases belongs to Tehran Province.

In an interview published on Saturday, August 17 in Shargh newspaper, he reported that the number of sexual assault cases officially reported in Tehran Province is 1,650 cases annually.

According to Madani, the results of some case studies show that victims of sexual assault in Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad Province had an average age of 20 years old, and some victims were as young as 7 years old.

He said another case study shows that in Isfahan Province, the average age of sexual assault victims was 23 years old.

This sociologist, emphasizing that “victim support in Iranian law is minimal,” stated: “We do not have an accurate assessment of sexual assault victims in the country.”
