Another British-Iranian Researcher Arrested in Iran; ‘Kamil Ahmadi’ Social Sciences Researcher

“Kamil Ahmadi,” a British-Iranian writer and social sciences researcher, has been detained by security forces in Tehran.

“Shafagh Rahmani,” the wife of “Kamil Ahmadi,” announced the researcher’s detention on her Instagram page on Tuesday, August 22, writing that Mr. Ahmadi was arrested on Sunday, August 20, and Branch One of the Evin Security Prosecutor’s Office issued a one-month detention order for him.

According to Ms. Rahmani’s Instagram post, there is currently no information available regarding the reason for his detention or the charges against Kamil Ahmadi.

According to a report by the Kurdistan Human Rights Network, Mr. Ahmadi’s residence and car were searched in three separate operations by security personnel, and some of his personal belongings were confiscated. On the third day of his detention, during a brief phone call with his wife, he requested a lawyer but did not provide information about his place of detention.

Last year, Kamil Ahmadi won the Literature and Human Sciences Award from the World Peace Foundation at George Washington University for his research and activities in the field of social harms, with emphasis on “gender,” “children,” and “minorities.”

As an anthropologist and researcher, Kamil Ahmadi recently conducted interviews with Iranian media outlets and told ISNA, among others, that based on research conducted, there are approximately 14,000 informal waste pickers in the country, and 89 percent of waste pickers are “illegal migrants.”
