Four Women’s Rights Activists in Iran Summoned to Execute Prison Sentences

Maryam Mohammadi, Nahid Shaghaqi, Akram Nasiryan, and Esrin Darkale, four women’s rights activists who were sentenced to a combined 16 years in prison by the Revolutionary Court, have been summoned to the Enforcement of Sentences unit.

Esrin Darkale announced on Tuesday, March 19, through a post on her Instagram account that these four women’s rights activists, who are also members of the “Voice of Women Iran” organization, were summoned to the Enforcement of Sentences unit after receiving a notice dated March 16.

The women’s rights activist, in announcing this news on her Instagram, stated that this summons was issued at a time when “the freedom or furlough of all prisoners has become a social necessity.”

These four women’s rights activists were previously sentenced on December 10 by Branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Afshari, each to four years and two months in prison on charges of “gathering and conspiracy,” “propaganda against the system,” and “pretending to commit an unlawful act in the form of appearing without a headscarf.” According to Article 134 of the Islamic Penal Code regarding the consolidation of sentences, only three years of this sentence will be enforceable.

The U.S. State Department says the Iranian regime has detained thousands of protesters, civil activists, and representatives of workers and other groups over the past two years.

The United States has repeatedly and in various instances condemned the violent treatment and widespread suppression of protesters and civil activists, as well as the repeated and continuous violation of the rights of Iranian citizens by the ruling regime in that country.
