Raheleh Ahmadi, Mother of Civil Activist Saba Kordafshari, Sentenced to 50 Months in Prison

«Raheleh Ahmadi», the mother of «Saba Kordafshari», a civil activist imprisoned in Iran, has been sentenced to four years and two months in prison by Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court.

Ms. Ahmadi announced this news on her Twitter page, stating that the verdict was delivered to her lawyer, Hossein Taj, on Monday, December 16. If confirmed by the appeals court, the sentence will be reduced to three years and six months and will be enforceable.

In announcing this news, she said, “Now for three years and six months, which is one thousand two hundred and seventy-seven nights, I will not be beside my daughter, and I will not stroke her hair.”

Voice of America had previously announced on Twitter that the hearing for Raheleh Ahmadi’s case would be held on Tuesday, December 10 at the Revolutionary Court.

Prior to this, Voice of America had reported that Raheleh Ahmadi was charged on Thursday, July 11 at the prosecutor’s office with charges of “propaganda against the regime,” “cooperation with hostile media,” and “incitement and facilitating corruption and obscenity.”

Raheleh Ahmadi, the mother of Ms. Kordafshari, was arrested on July 19 by security forces with the aim of pressuring her daughter to give a television interview. After some time, she was temporarily released from prison after posting a 700 million toman bail until the end of legal proceedings.

Saba Kordafshari, a civil activist and prisoner and a protester against mandatory hijab, has previously been sentenced by the Revolutionary Court to 15 years imprisonment on the charge of incitement to corruption and obscenity, to seven years and six months imprisonment on the charge of assembly and conspiracy with intent to commit crimes against national security, and to one year and six months imprisonment on the charge of propaganda activities against the regime.

The U.S. State Department has repeatedly condemned the violent approaches of the Islamic Republic regime against the Iranian people under various pretexts, including restrictions on freedom of choice in dress, as well as the repeated and continuous violation of Iranian citizens’ rights by regime officials.
