Islamic Republic of Iran’s Influence in U.S. Foreign Policy Apparatus

The Islamic Republic of Iran’s influence in the U.S. foreign policy apparatus has triggered significant reactions within the said mechanism.

According to joint reports by Semaphore, a U.S. website, and Iran International network regarding the connections of individuals close to Robert Malley, the U.S. representative on Iran affairs who was suspended, with a network of experts affiliated with the Islamic Republic concerning JCPOA matters, extensive reactions ensued.

Matthew Miller, spokesperson for the U.S. State Department, emphasized regarding the aforementioned report that anyone entering the U.S. government to work on sensitive matters must obtain security clearance, which is conducted through comprehensive background checks by experienced experts. Ali Vaez, director of the Iran section at the International Crisis Group, also denied the allegation on X network (formerly Twitter), calling it meaningless and defamatory to the Islamic Republic.

Following the publication of the aforementioned report, Michael McCaul, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, called for clarification regarding reports published about the infiltration of a network of Islamic Republic operatives into Western political circles and the U.S. government.

He stated in his statement: “Reports about relations between Robert Malley, the U.S. special envoy on Iran affairs, and an Iranian official who, according to sources, was a key member of Iran’s infiltration campaign are alarming.”

According to his remarks, many participants in Iran’s infiltration campaign had close relations with Robert Malley, and Robert Malley is under investigation for misuse of classified information and is currently on unpaid leave from the State Department. He further stated: “In February 2021, Robert Malley hired one of the members of Iran’s infiltration campaign named Aryan Tabatabai to assist him in his negotiations with Iran. Aryan Tabatabai was transferred to the Department of Defense after 15 months and now holds a senior position at the Department of Defense. These reports demonstrate that the Biden administration has a weak policy toward Iran and is emboldening a dangerous adversary.”

Michael McCaul concluded by calling for transparency on the matter and stated that the American people deserve clarity about this affair. However, the State Department spokesperson attributed the claims of connections between Iranian-descent advisors and networks linked to the Islamic Republic to a decade ago and stated that these individuals no longer work for the U.S. government and security reviews regarding one of them who still works for the U.S. Department of Defense were conducted according to standard procedures.
