Shadkam Sentenced to 35 Years Imprisonment and Two Years Forced Residence in Nikshahr

Mohammad Ghayemi, the defense lawyer of Abbas Nouri Shadkam, a social activist, announced that his client has been sentenced to 35 years of discretionary imprisonment and two years of forced residence in Nikshahr, Sistan and Baluchestan Province. Shadkam was arrested in 2016 by Intelligence Officers of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
Mohammad Ghayemi, the defense lawyer of Abbas Nouri Shadkam, announced on Sunday, September 17 (September 8) via a tweet the sentencing of his client to 35 years of imprisonment and two years of forced residence in Nikshahr, Sistan and Baluchestan Province.
Ghayemi wrote in his tweet: “My client, Mr. Abbas Nouri Shadkam, a social activist, was convicted in Branch 1 of the Criminal Court of Yazd Province on charges of insulting the Prophet, insulting Prophet David, Fatimah, Prophet Moses, and Khadijah to 35 years of imprisonment (each charge carrying 7 years of imprisonment, of which only one is enforceable according to Article 134 of the Islamic Penal Code) and two years of forced residence in Nikshahr.”
Mohammad Ghayemi, the defense lawyer of Abbas Nouri Shadkam, also stated that the verdict issued for his client has been upheld by the Supreme Court of the country and will soon be communicated to his client for enforcement.
This legal counsel added: “In addition to these charges, other charges including insulting the Prophet and propaganda against the system were also brought against Mr. Nouri in the Bafgh Revolutionary Court, from which he was fortunately acquitted.”
According to the news agency “Hrana,” the news organ of the Human Rights Activists in Iran coalition, the court hearing on Shadkam’s charges took place last year in the Criminal Court of Yazd Province. The Hrana report also stated that he was arrested due to “Telegram activities” and on charges of “propaganda against the system.”
Abbas Nouri Shadkam was arrested in August 2016 by Intelligence Officers of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps due to his Telegram activities and on charges of propaganda against the system, and after nearly 11 months, on June 20, 2017, he was released upon posting bail of 1.5 billion tomans.
The final court session regarding the charges against Mr. Shadkam, which resulted in the issuance of a 35-year imprisonment sentence and two-year forced residence in Nikshahr, was held in June of last year in Branch 1 of the Criminal Court of Yazd Province.
According to Iranian human rights activists, the large number of charges against civil, labor, and social activists has given judges the latitude to issue maximum sentences.
Abbas Nouri Shadkam faces five charges. The 35-year imprisonment and two-year forced residence sentence in Nikshahr, Sistan and Baluchestan Province was issued against Abbas Nouri Shadkam for five charges.
