Sepideh Farhan, Civil Activist, Transferred to Prison to Serve 6-Year Sentence

Sepideh Farhan (Farahabad), a civil activist sentenced to six years in prison and 74 lashes, has been transferred to Evin Prison to serve her sentence.

According to reports published on social media, this civil activist, who was previously sentenced by Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court on charges of “disrupting public order through participation in illegal gatherings” and “assembly and conspiracy with intent to commit acts against national security” to six years in prison and 74 lashes, was transferred to Evin Prison on Wednesday, December 31 (Dey 11) to serve her sentence.

Previously, a source close to Farhan told Voice of America that the verdict issued by the Tehran Revolutionary Court in absentia on July 21 (Tir 30) was upheld verbatim by Branch 36 of the Court of Appeals, and this ruling was read to the activist on Monday, August 23 (Mordad 2) when she appeared before the mentioned branch.

Sepideh Farhan was arrested on December 12, 2017 (Dey 12, 1396) during nationwide protests in Tehran and was temporarily released from Evin Prison on February 17, 2018 (Esfand 28 of that year) after posting a 250 million toman bail pending the completion of legal proceedings.

In July of last year, Human Rights Watch issued a statement indicating that Iranian authorities have intensified the suppression of protesting students by issuing prison sentences and imposing restrictions on peaceful activities.

The U.S. State Department has also repeatedly condemned violent confrontations and widespread suppression of protesters and opponents of the regime under various pretexts, as well as the repeated and ongoing violations of Iranian citizens’ rights by the ruling regime in that country.
