Reports of ‘Killing’ of Political Prisoner by Two Criminal Inmates in Tehran Prison

According to reports circulating on social media and online networks, Alireza Shirmohamadali, a political prisoner at Tehran Central Prison (Fashafuyeh), was attacked by two criminal inmates and lost his life. Iranian judicial authorities have not yet released any information regarding this incident.
According to reports published on social media and online outlets, on Monday, June 9 (Khordad 20), “two criminal inmates attacked Mr. Shirmohamadali with knives.”
According to the reports, the attackers inflicted blows on Alireza Shirmohamadali that caused severe injuries and wounds, and Mr. Shirmohamadali lost his life before reaching the hospital.
As reported earlier by the Iranian human rights activists collective regarding the trial proceedings of 21-year-old Alireza Shirmohamadali, he had been sentenced to eight years of imprisonment on charges of “insulting sacred values,” “insulting the founder of the Islamic Republic,” “insulting the leader,” and “propaganda against the system.”
The arrest of Mr. Shirmohamadali dates back to late July of last year and, according to reports, was carried out in connection with his activities on social media.
It is said that Shirmohamadali and Barzan Mohammadi, another prisoner detained during the August 2017 protests, went on a hunger strike due to “lack of personal security” in Fashafuyeh Prison and opposition to a plan to request transfer to Evin Prison.
The hunger strike ended in late March after receiving “aid promises from the prosecutor’s representative.” However, it appears that over recent months there has been no significant change in the situation of these two prisoners, at least they have not been transferred to another prison.
The conditions of prisoners, and specifically political prisoners, in Fashafuyeh Prison have repeatedly been accompanied by protests from both domestic and international observers as well as the prisoners themselves.
Some of the prisoners in Fashafuyeh have described the conditions there as “inhumane.”
Nader Fatourehchi, a journalist who was in Fashafuyeh, wrote in a report about prisoners’ conditions: “There is no one in Iran more defenseless and oppressed than them. They are literally living under inhumane conditions and experiencing a double persecution that would be unbearable for a human being even for a single day.”
Reports of attacks on political prisoners in Fashafuyeh are not unprecedented; for example, in September of last year when Human Rights Watch reported “beatings” of Dervishes held in that prison.
This is while some Iranian domestic news agencies such as “Tasnim” had described this prison as “a camp or special prison for drug convicts” with “wards equipped with all facilities.”
Tehran Central Prison or Fashafuyeh Prison is located 32 kilometers south of Tehran.
Iranian judicial authorities have not yet responded to reports regarding the “killing” of Alireza Shirmohamadali.
