Human Rights Watch Calls for Immediate Release of Those Detained on International Workers’ Day in Iran

Human Rights Watch has issued a statement calling for the immediate release of those detained on International Workers’ Day in Iran.

In a statement published on Wednesday, May 15th, Human Rights Watch has demanded that Iranian authorities “immediately and unconditionally release at least eight activists and journalists” arrested during protests on International Workers’ Day.

The statement emphasizes that these individuals were detained for exercising their right to peaceful assembly and should be released.

The statement names Neda Naji, Atefeh Rangriz, Nahid Khodajou, Nasrin Javadi, Farhad Sheikhi, Hassan Saeedi, and two journalists Marzieh Amiri and Keyvan Samimi as those detained.

International Workers’ Day gatherings in Iran turned violent, with dozens of people detained during these gatherings. Following these arrests, the U.S. State Department’s Farsi Twitter page criticized the detention of Iranian labor activists on International Workers’ Day.

The U.S. State Department said that the Islamic Republic regime, with the expenses it has incurred in Syria, could have paid workers’ rights in Iran.

Earlier, Amnesty International issued a statement on International Workers’ Day demanding that Islamic Republic officials immediately release workers and civil activists who were detained in strikes and other peaceful protests.
