General Provisions of ‘Intensified Punishment for Acid Attacks’ Bill Approved with ‘Execution’ as Penalty

While one-third of executions worldwide take place in Iran, representatives of the Islamic Consultative Assembly approved the general provisions of a bill to intensify punishment for acid attacks, which includes execution as a penalty.
Representatives of the Islamic Consultative Assembly approved the general provisions of this bill on Monday in an open session with 206 votes in favor, 4 votes against, and 3 abstentions.
In the bill to intensify punishment for acid attacks, “execution” is considered one of the penalties for acid attacks.
Fateme Hosseini, a parliamentary representative, told ISNA about the details of this bill that in the matter of intensifying punishment for acid attacks, in addition to “retaliation for life or limb,” taking into account the value of compensation for body parts, disciplinary imprisonment of grades 1 to 4 are provided for.
The inclusion of execution as a penalty in this bill comes at a time when acid attack victims have stated that execution is not what they want.
Marziyeh Ebrahimi, one of the acid attack victims in Isfahan, said that they seek to “stop the cycle of violence” rather than execution.
According to a report by Amnesty International last year, a total of 253 executions were carried out in Iran, which is more than one-third of all registered executions in the world.
