Price of Rice Per Kilogram in Iran Exceeds 23,000 Tomans

In continuation of the upward trend of prices in Iran’s market, Iranian media outlets report that the price of Iranian rice has doubled compared to last year.

Fars News Agency reported on Sunday, May 19, that the doubling of rice prices despite having twice the rice reserves compared to last year is highly significant, with the only clue to this being found in the “hoarding” of these essential items.

The news agency reported that each kilogram of rice in the market has reached more than 23,000 tomans with a 100 percent price increase, while six months ago the price of Iranian rice was around 12,000 tomans in Tehran’s market.

The rise in rice prices in Iran’s market comes at a time when even rice imports, according to an official at the Ministry of Industry, Mines and Trade, continue with government currency at 4,200 tomans, and “rice production in the current year will exceed last year.”

However, some reports indicate that the price of rice in some stores, including Refah stores, reaches up to 28,000 tomans.

Previously, the spokesperson of the Islamic Consultative Assembly’s Agriculture Commission had stated that given the 100 percent increase in general commodity prices and rising production costs, it is obvious that rice prices are subject to these factors and face an upward trend in the market.

Iran’s market, after the increase in meat and poultry prices, has also experienced an upward trend in prices of other items including onions, tomatoes, pasta, and canned tuna. Price increases have not stopped even with the opening of corruption cases.
