More than 113 Million People Were Hungry in 2018

Research shows that in 2018, more than 113 million people worldwide were hungry due to war, climate change, and economic instability globally. Experts warn that 143 million others are on the brink of food crisis.

Expert research indicates that due to war, climate change, and economic instability in 2018, more than 113 million people around the world were in a critical food security situation. Researchers have also warned that the food crisis in the coming year will affect tens of millions of people worldwide.

Statistics on world hunger for 2017 recorded approximately 124 million people.

According to a report released by the Food Security Information Network on April 2 (April 2), conflicts and insecurity are responsible for the dire situation of 74 million people, which is equivalent to two-thirds of those experts warn urgently need assistance.

The Food Security Information Network is a global project launched by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

For its research, the network used a five-phase scale, with the third phase identified as “crisis,” the fourth phase as “emergency,” and the fifth phase as “catastrophe.”

According to the Thomson Reuters Foundation, Luca Russo, senior analyst at FAO, warned that the living conditions of millions of other people may reach the third phase or higher phases.

Luca Russo continued: “The reported figure of 113 million people is actually the tip of the iceberg that has emerged. If you look at the people who are in the lower part of this iceberg, it is true that they are not experiencing a food crisis, but they are on the verge of reaching it.”

The FAO senior analyst explains that the situation of 143 million other people is so fragile that even a short period of drought would push them into a food crisis.

He further said: “If we do not work fundamentally on the problems of these people and do not eliminate some of the factors that will put them in a critical situation, the number of hungry people in the world will increase dramatically.”

Which countries faced food crisis last year?

Among the countries that faced food crisis in 2018, war-torn Yemen experienced the worst situation with 16 million hungry people.

The Democratic Republic of Congo with 13 million citizens in need of food and Afghanistan with approximately 10.6 million hungry people rank second and third.
