Iran’s Environmental Protection Unit: Cigarette Butts Repeatedly Caused Rangeland Fires

Jamshid Mohabbat-Khani, commander of Iran’s environmental protection unit, says investigations by this institution show that throwing cigarette butts out of vehicles while traveling has “repeatedly caused rangeland fires.”

Mr. Mohabbat-Khani, in an interview with ISNA news agency, reminded that in addition to fire hazard, cigarette butts or cigarette filters cause water pollution.

According to the commander of the environmental protection unit, each cigarette filter can poison and contaminate 500 liters of water, and this certainly affects biodiversity.

Jamshid Mohabbat-Khani emphasized in another part of his interview with ISNA that most last year’s fires occurred during Nowruz holidays, and “Mazandaran, Gilan, and Golestan provinces had the highest rates of fires, respectively.”
