Student Protest Gathering at Tarbiat Modares University in Tehran

A group of students from Tarbiat Modares University in Tehran held a protest gathering in opposition to the university president’s policies and their own welfare problems.

While chanting slogans including “Budget and expenses must be made transparent,” “Displaced students have no peace,” the students called for the resignation of some officials at Tarbiat Modares University.

The protesting students complained that the university budget was not spent properly due to mismanagement, and in return, welfare facilities that should have been made available to students were instead rented to institutions and individuals for income generation.

The management of universities and the selection of the science minister and university presidents in recent years have been points of contention between institutions and figures close to the Islamic Republic’s leader and the government.

The judiciary and security forces have arrested and imprisoned student activists in many cases, including during last year’s December protests, when dozens of student activists were arrested by security forces.
