US: Iran’s Missile Attacks in Syria Endanger Forces Fighting ISIS

A US State Department official responded to Iran’s recent missile attack on Syria by telling Voice of America’s Persian service that we are aware of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps’ announcement of launching ballistic missiles into Syria in response to attacks that occurred in Ahvaz last week.

The US State Department official said we can confirm that Iran’s missile attack on eastern Syria targeted areas under ISIS control, and given the natural complexities of the battlefield, such attacks endanger forces that are actively fighting ISIS in Syria.

He continued by stating that as we have previously said, the continued development of Iran’s ballistic missile program and (Tehran’s) support for terrorism is provocative and weakens security, prosperity, and stability throughout the region, and there are issues in this regard that we are closely monitoring.

The State Department official, who requested anonymity, further noted in response to Voice of America’s question that UN Security Council Resolution 2231 calls on Iran to refrain from any activities related to the design of ballistic missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads.

He added that we will continue to use all tools at our disposal to counter threats from the Iranian regime.

Two weeks after an armed attack on a military parade in the city of Ahvaz in southern Iran, the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps announced on Monday that in response to an “ISIS attack,” it had launched a missile attack on the militants’ bases.
