Shooting at Iranian Parliament; ‘Suicide Explosion’ at Ayatollah Khomeini’s Mausoleum

Iranian news agencies are reporting the occurrence of shooting in the ‘corridors’ of parliament as well as at the mausoleum of Ayatollah Khomeini on Wednesday, June 7th.
Reports indicate that several people were wounded and injured during the shootings.
According to reports from Iranian news agencies, on Wednesday, within minutes of each other, several armed individuals attacked the Iranian parliament and the shrine of Ayatollah Khomeini.
At 10:30 AM on Wednesday, news agencies reported that one individual, by firing at parliamentary security forces, entered the building of this institution, and three of these forces were wounded in the clash.
Minutes later, however, ISNA news agency reported that four armed individuals entered parliament by shooting and continue their shooting with the aim of targeting a number of parliamentary security forces.
According to a report by IRIB news agency, Elias Hazrati, representative of Tehran, said: “The attackers were three people who were equipped with two Kalashnikov rifles and one handgun (pistol).”
Tasnim news agency also announced, based on ‘reports,’ that one of the parliament’s security personnel was killed in this clash.
The agency, however, stated that no official source has confirmed this news and it has published this news solely based on reports.
According to Iranian news agencies, following this incident, the exit and entrance doors of parliament were closed and representatives were prevented from leaving the parliamentary floor. Nevertheless, the parliament session continued.
While ISNA news agency reports the continuation of clashes between armed individuals and parliamentary security forces, Akbar Ranjbarzadeh, a member of parliament’s presidium board, announced the arrest of one armed individual.
According to Mihan news agency, he said: “This happened after the first gate and outside the closed perimeter of parliament.”
Security for parliament and most government institutions in Iran is the responsibility of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. In the parliament building there are several entrance and exit doors, some of which are several hundred meters away from the main parliamentary floor building, and within this distance there are also several electronic doors.
