Anniversary Meeting of Iran Nuclear Agreement in UN Security Council; US Objects to Islamic Republic of Iran’s Conduct

The US representative to the United Nations said in a message ahead of the start of the UN Security Council meeting on Iran’s nuclear agreement and its resolution 2231 that the new report by the UN Secretary-General demonstrates violations of the Security Council resolution by the Islamic Republic of Iran.
According to Nikki Haley, today’s report by the UN Secretary-General contains evidence that Iran has violated and continues to violate UN Security Council resolutions by sending weapons to various points in the Middle East and supporting terrorist organizations, although this is hardly surprising.
She added: With support for the Houthis, Hezbollah, Hamas, and Bashar Assad, Iran’s behavior demonstrates that its commitment involves spending enormous national resources on supporting terrorism and destabilizing the region, rather than spending these resources on domestic needs.
The US representative to the United Nations further emphasized that the United States will not allow Iran’s violations and destructive actions to go unanswered, and called on other members of the Security Council to do the same.
Ms. Haley concluded by noting that the evidence contained in this latest UN Secretary-General report clearly demonstrates to all of us the consequences of inaction and passivity in the face of Iran’s conduct.
Security Council Meeting
The Wednesday afternoon Security Council meeting took place on the third anniversary of the adoption of Security Council resolution 2231, which was issued in the year 1394 following Iran’s nuclear agreement with six world powers, members of the P5+1 group, including the United States, in endorsement of that agreement.
According to reports, the US representative to the United Nations did not participate in this meeting. Ms. Haley was traveling in India.
Rosemary DiCarlo, UN Under-Secretary-General, referred at this meeting to Iran’s commitment to the nuclear agreement and said that the UN Secretary-General is asking Tehran to carefully review the concerns raised by member states regarding those measures by Iran that allegedly contradict the limitations contained in Annex B.
Her reference was to Iran’s ballistic missile program. These statements were met with a sharp reaction from Russia. Vassily Nebenzia, Russia’s representative to the United Nations, criticized the UN Under-Secretary-General’s report.
In this session, Jonathan Cohen, Deputy US Ambassador to the United Nations, in his remarks referred to UN resolutions including 2231, 2261, 1701, and 1559, saying that in these resolutions we, as members of this council, have prohibited weapons exports by Iran and weapons supply to the Houthis and Hezbollah.
He added: Standing against Iran’s destabilizing conduct is a mission that all of us must be committed to.
At this meeting, the French representative also said that as long as Iran remains committed to the JCPOA, France remains committed to it.
Also, the British representative at this meeting said we are concerned about Iran’s testing of missiles designed to carry nuclear warheads, and we demand their immediate halt.
Donald Trump, President of the United States, on May 8 this year, declaring that the Islamic Republic violates the spirit of the JCPOA by continuing its ballistic missile program and hostile actions in the Middle East, announced that Washington is withdrawing from it.
Mike Pompeo, US Secretary of State, in early June, while outlining America’s new strategy toward Iran, presented 12 conditions for negotiating a new agreement; conditions that some have found difficult and Tehran has rejected so far.
