4,020 Iranian Deaths from Suicide Last Year/ Which Age Group Has the Highest Suicide Rate in Iran?

ILNA reported: The head of the country’s social emergency services, referring to statistics from the World Health Organization showing that the number of suicide deaths in Iran in 2015 was 4,020 cases, stated: The age group of 15 to 25 years accounts for the highest number of suicide deaths in the country.
Hossein Asadbeigi, discussing the World Health Organization’s report on suicide, noted that based on this report Iran’s ranking in terms of suicide is 108th, and stated: According to this report, the number of suicide deaths in Iran during 2013 and 2014 was 4,069 people, and in 2015 it was 4,020.
He continued: In 2012, the suicide death rate among men was 7 per 100,000 people, totaling 2,700 men who died by suicide, while this rate among women was 3.6 per 100,000 people, meaning 1,369 women.
Asadbeigi, pointing to America’s ranking of 39th in suicide deaths, stated: In 2012, 43,000 people in America committed suicide. Similarly, in India, with a population of over 1 billion people, 258,000 people committed suicide in 2012, which according to WHO reports placed this country at 10th rank for suicide in the world.
The head of the country’s social emergency services, stating that the average suicide rate in the world with a population of over 7 billion was 14 per 100,000 people, noted: South Korea, Guyana, Lithuania, Sri Lanka, Suriname, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Japan, Belarus, and India ranked 1st to 10th respectively in suicide deaths in 2012.
He emphasized: In this report, Persian Gulf rim countries had the lowest suicide rates, which he attributed to the reporting of inaccurate and lower statistics by these countries. Also, China is the only country where the suicide rate among women was higher than among men.
This psychologist, stressing that the western provinces of the country including Ilam, Kermanshah, Lorestan, and Hamadan had the highest number of suicide deaths relative to their populations, clarified: Unfortunately, recently due to lack of oversight in the distribution of rice pills, many cases of suicide and death have occurred for this reason, which requires that sales by herbalists be controlled.
Asadbeigi, referring to the death of 500 people in Gilan, Mazandaran, and Tehran provinces due to the use of rice pills, stated: Hanging and poisoning caused by toxins and drugs were also the second most common cause of suicide deaths after rice pills, while suicide attempts using sleeping pills and anti-anxiety medications result in fewer deaths.
The head of the country’s social emergency services, stating that in Iran the age group of 15 to 25 years has the highest number of suicide deaths and this is very low among people over 50 years old, noted: In American and European countries, elderly people commit suicide more than young people.
He named hopelessness as one of the most important reasons for youth suicide, stating: Usually elderly people have endured life’s hardships and become more resilient, but adolescents and young adults, due to not having learned various life skills and their impulsive behavior, as well as their lower resilience and various psychological, social, and economic reasons, resort to suicide more often, a matter that requires more scientific research.
Asadbeigi stated: The social emergency services of the country, in 190 cities, provide free assistance to all individuals who have attempted suicide and to families of those who have lost their lives to suicide, and also provide their social psychological services through line 123, mobile service vehicles, and crisis intervention centers.
He added: Our colleagues in the social emergency services have also been able, through interviews and negotiations, to dissuade individuals who have threatened suicide from doing so, and in some cases have admitted these individuals to hospitals.
