Arrest of Over 1,500 Protesters in Russia Faces International Criticism

The United States, European Union, and human rights groups criticized the arrest of hundreds of protesters on Monday in Russia.
More than 1,500 supporters of Alexei Navalny, leader of Russia’s opposition, were arrested on Monday during demonstrations held at his call in various Russian cities. These protests were organized in the context of fighting corruption.
An international non-governmental organization that monitors police activities says most of those arrested were released on Tuesday.
Alexei Navalny, who was himself arrested on Monday in Moscow, has been sentenced to 30 days in prison on charges of organizing an illegal gathering.
