Hundreds of Iranian University Professors Warn Against Military Interference in Politics

Nearly three hundred and fifty university professors from across the country issued an open letter addressed to Hassan Rouhani, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran. While praising his “strategic policies” regarding the nuclear issue, they simultaneously criticized “certain institutions” that, despite being unauthorized to interfere in politics, “have openly taken confrontational positions against the will of the people.”

According to CNN, the authors of this letter expressed dissatisfaction with the fact that some Revolutionary Guards commanders have described the nuclear agreements with world powers as “self-humiliating,” characterizing such actions as steps contrary to national interests.

The signatories of this letter claimed that the decisive vote of “Iran’s wise people” for the List of Hope across the country was a show of support for this very policy and “the continuation of this path.”

These university professors described the nuclear negotiations as a “rational historical model for the peaceful resolution of disputes in international relations,” the purpose of which was to “neutralize many serious threats.”

This open letter called on all state forces to create the conditions for further government successes in domestic and foreign affairs.

They called upon “the country’s political elites” to resort to a “comprehensive national dialogue.” According to the authors of this letter, expanding the space for national dialogue, building trust in social capital, and ultimately expanding social participation will lead to increased national wealth and economic stability.

The signatories of this letter, referring to “the crises and disputes of recent years,” claimed that overcoming this phase requires national reconciliation, expanded space for national dialogue, and respect for the opinions and will of the people.
