European Parliament Calls for Sanctions Against Those Responsible for Mahsa Amini’s Death and Protest Suppressors in Iran

The European Parliament on Thursday condemned the death of Mahsa Amini in the custody of the morality police and called for sanctions against those responsible for this incident.
On Thursday, October 6, the European Parliament approved a resolution condemning the death of Mahsa Amini and called on the European Union to punish those responsible for her death and individuals involved in suppressing recent protests in Iran.
The European Parliament examined the developments and events in Iran following the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish-Iranian girl, in the custody of the morality police, and the widespread protests against the hardline clerical regime in Iran during this session.
The European Parliament’s press office stated in a statement: “Members of Parliament strongly condemned the death of Mahsa Amini and called for impartial, effective, and most importantly independent investigations into the mistreatment and tragic death of Ms. Amini.”
The statement recalled that Ms. Amini was arrested on September 13 for allegedly violating strict hijab regulations and died three days later in a hospital as a result of physical mistreatment during her detention and afterward.
The European Parliament, while firmly supporting Iran’s protest movement and peaceful demonstrations, particularly young women leading and participating in these protests, strongly condemned the widespread and reckless use of suppression tools by law enforcement and security institutions against protesters, which has resulted in numerous casualties.
The statement adds: “Members of the European Parliament demand that the Iranian government immediately and unconditionally release all detainees and revoke all charges and indictments against individuals who have only exercised their natural right to freedom of expression and participation in peaceful gatherings, as well as all civil activists and human rights defenders arrested in recent days.”
Members of the European Parliament also called on the European Union in this resolution to sanction officials and authorities involved in Mahsa Amini’s death and the violent suppression of recent protests under the “European Union Human Rights Sanctions Regime.”
The European Parliament has also requested the United Nations, specifically the Human Rights Council, to investigate recent events in Iran.
Members of the European Parliament concluded this statement by calling on all European countries with diplomatic representation in Iran to coordinate their measures to defend the rights of detainees, particularly women’s rights activists and Iranian citizens who hold European citizenship.
