Truck drives into Stockholm store, killing several

Swedish police say a truck has driven into a department store in the Swedish capital, Stockholm, killing at least four people and injuring several others.

Swedish police say they have arrested two people following the attack.

Police announced Friday night that the first person was arrested in the northern suburbs of the city after CCTV footage of him was released.

The truck driver fled the scene after striking a busy downtown street on Friday.

Following this attack, border controls were tightened at the request of the Prime Minister.

Police released images of the man, who was wearing a hooded sweatshirt, early Friday evening and confirmed that a person resembling him had been arrested in the Mashta district.

“We investigated several people this evening… and recently arrested one person who is of particular interest to us,” said police detective Jan Onsson, referring to the arrest in Mashta.

A second person was arrested in Yllästa, northwest of Stockholm, who police say is connected to the man arrested in Mähsta.

The Swedish intelligence agency has called the incident a deliberate act.

The Swedish Prime Minister has also said that the country has been targeted and that evidence indicates that a "terrorist" act has taken place.

"We have not had any contact with the truck driver," Swedish police chief Dan Eliasson told reporters.

Another police officer showed reporters photos of a man wearing a white shirt, a black hooded jacket and a green military jacket. The police images also showed the man with a dark beard.

Following the attack, the Stockholm metro was closed and police asked people to leave the city center.

The incident took place on one of the main streets, which is a pedestrian crossing, and police have currently blocked off part of the city center.

The company that owns the truck said the vehicle was stolen this morning.

According to reports, thick smoke rose from the scene after the incident.

BBC security correspondent Frank Gardner, citing security sources, said that gunfire was heard from another part of Stockholm.

It is not yet clear whether the two incidents are related.

Video footage shows the area blocked off by police and ambulances rushing to the scene.

The sound of helicopters patrolling central Stockholm can be heard.

Eyewitnesses told local media that they saw a truck drive into the windows of a store and then saw people on the ground.

"It's confusing. I don't know how many people were injured. A lot of people are in shock," said an eyewitness who works at the store.
