Student activist Leila Hosseinzadeh sentenced to five years in prison

Branch 28 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court sentenced student activist Leila Hosseinzadeh to five years in prison and a two-year ban on online activities.
In her new case, Ms. Hosseinzadeh is accused of "gathering and colluding with the intention of acting against national security."
Her defense attorney, Amir Raisian, wrote in a tweet that the charge is based on "organizing a small gathering of students" and Leila Hosseinzadeh's presence at the gathering, which was held to congratulate the birthday of and commemorate Mohammad Sharifi-Moghaddam, a student and imprisoned dervish.
Leila Hosseinzadeh was among the University of Tehran students who was arrested during the January 2017 protests and released on bail after two weeks.
Following his arrest in 2017, this student activist was sentenced to 30 months in prison and a two-year ban on leaving the country on charges of "propaganda against the regime."
Leila Hosseinzadeh was arrested in August 2019 and transferred to Evin Prison to carry out this sentence. She was granted amnesty and released in March of the same year.
