US House Speaker 'Strongly' Opposes Iran's Access to Dollars

According to FCNN, citing the Persian Voice of America, the Republican Speaker of the US House of Representatives on Thursday opposed any measure that would help Iran gain access to the US dollar in its trade transactions.

Following the implementation of the comprehensive nuclear agreement between Iran and the international community last January and the lifting of some sanctions on Iran, Republicans have expressed concern about Tehran's ability to access the US financial system and use the dollar in its foreign transactions.

According to Reuters, Paul Ryan said, noting that such a move would allow Tehran to do whatever it wants, adding, "That's one of the reasons I strongly oppose any action by the (US) administration that might allow Iran to have access to dollars."

This is despite the fact that senior US government officials have previously emphasized that while Washington will not prevent other countries' banks from trading with Iranian banks that are no longer targeted by sanctions within the framework of the JCPOA, it will not allow Tehran access to the US financial system.

In late April, US Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs Thomas Shannon emphasized in a meeting of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that such permission would not be granted to Tehran under the guise of easing sanctions within the framework of the nuclear agreement.
