Industrial alcohol poisoning continues in Iran

Following the spread of the coronavirus and the improper use of industrial alcohol to prevent the virus, the number of victims of industrial alcohol poisoning is increasing.

According to news published by ISNA news agency, the head of the Fars Province Emergency and Disaster Management Center has announced that the trend of alcohol poisoning in the province is increasing, and as of Thursday, April 27, at least 606 people have visited hospitals and medical centers in the province due to alcohol poisoning, of which 532 have been hospitalized.

According to this report, in the past 24 hours, at least two more people have died from alcohol poisoning in this province, bringing the number of deaths in Fars Province from industrial alcohol consumption to 74.

The news of Iranian citizens being poisoned after consuming industrial alcohol is not limited to Fars Province. Over the past few days, news published by official Iranian news agencies has also indicated poisoning of citizens living in other provinces, including Alborz, Kohgiluyeh and Boyer Ahmad, Khorasan Razavi, East Azerbaijan, and Kermanshah Province.

According to published news, at least 21 citizens living in Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad provinces and 20 citizens of East Azerbaijan have lost their lives to date.

Previously, the Voice of America reported that at least 240 people have died from industrial alcohol poisoning in various provinces of Iran in the past month. The figure has been increasing based on news reports in recent days.

A new wave of alcohol poisoning in Iran has intensified after rumors spread that drinking alcohol could prevent the coronavirus. According to officials, some people have been selling methanol (industrial alcohol) to people by adding chemicals to it, which is toxic and deadly. Experts say that drinking alcohol has no effect on preventing the coronavirus.
