US State Department: Our priority is a constructive resumption of talks for a rapid and reciprocal return to the JCPOA

As talks to revive the Iran nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), continue in Vienna, a US State Department spokesperson says that the US priority is a constructive resumption of talks to quickly return to the nuclear deal.

A US State Department spokesperson said in a written response to Kambiz Tavanah, a VOA Persian correspondent, “Our priority is to resume constructive talks in a manner that ensures all parties work towards … a rapid and reciprocal return to full compliance with the JCPOA obligations.”

The US State Department spokesman added: "It is still too early to say whether Iran has returned to negotiations in a more constructive manner."

Enrique Moura, the coordinator of the negotiations to revive the JCPOA, said on January 26, at the end of the JCPOA Joint Commission meeting in Vienna, that it was time for Tehran and Washington to make political decisions and that there was not much time left to reach a conclusion.

At a news conference after the Joint Commission meeting, Mr. Mora rejected suggestions that the United States and European countries had given the talks until the end of January or early February to conclude, but said: "Everyone agrees that it should be done in a short period of time, which means a few weeks."

This part will be held in Vienna from the eighth round until Thursday, January 29, and will continue in Vienna from Monday, January 13, with a three-day break at the end of the month due to the arrival of the New Year.

The United States, while emphasizing "diplomacy" as the best solution to address the issue of Iran's nuclear program, has announced that in the absence of seriousness and goodwill on the part of the Islamic Republic, it will resort to "other options."
