14 Killed and 24 Injured in Bus Rollover Accident in Mazandaran Province

The head of emergency services in Mazandaran Province announced that following the rollover of a bus near Sowadkuh city on Sunday, November 14th, 14 people were killed and 24 others were injured.

According to the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting news agency, Saleh Tabari stated that 9 women and 15 men who were injured in this accident were transferred to “Shahday-e Zirab” hospital, and treatment or arrangements to transfer them to other medical centers are ongoing.

According to Pirouz Hanachi, head of the National Emergency Medical Services Organization, a bus was traveling from Tehran toward Gonbad on Sunday when it overturned at 18:46, after the second “Volk” tunnel.

The second “Volk” tunnel is located near Sowadkuh city in Mazandaran Province.

According to Hanachi, two of those killed in this accident were children under four years old.

The Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting reported that the bus collided with the guardrail and then a concrete barrier on the road “due to the driver’s inability to control the vehicle,” and subsequently overturned.

Iran is one of the world’s most accident-prone countries in terms of driving. According to a report published by Iran’s Central Insurance Research Institute, among 190 countries in the world, Iran has the highest road death rate after the African country of Sierra Leone.

According to Taghi Mehri, head of the Traffic Police of Iran’s Law Enforcement Force, from 1998 to the end of last year, 459,000 people were killed and over 4.5 million people were injured in traffic accidents.

The rollover of a bus carrying students in Hormozgan Province on September 1st received significant coverage, and a number of government officials and parliament representatives issued statements demanding accountability for those responsible.

The rollover of a bus carrying 45 passengers, including female students from Rudan and Minab cities, who were heading to Shiraz to participate in a national youth camp, resulted in 9 deaths and numerous injuries.

According to Hassan Nouri, deputy head of the National Emergency Medical Services Organization, two of the injured in this accident suffered “limb amputation” and two others suffered “spinal cord injury.”
